Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is getting clowned by Twitter following his announcement to end the state-wide mandate on masks.
On Tuesday, the 63-year-old Republican lifted the state’s mask mandate where there are currently 2.6 million COVID-19-related cases and 44,353 COVID-19-related deaths. Despite him knowing that information, he announced that businesses would be allowed to open at 100 percent capacity, and no one will have to wear a mask starting March 10.
“Too many Texans have been sidelined from employment opportunities. Too many small business owners have struggled to pay their bills. This must end. It is now time to open Texas 100%,” he said. Falling in line behind Abbott is Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, who also announced Tuesday that he would be closing the door on mask mandates and allowing businesses to reopen at 100 percent capacity. “Our hospitalizations and case numbers have plummeted, and the vaccine is being rapidly distributed. It is time!”
It didn’t take long for people to drag Abbott online; Twitter came with the reads tenfold. “Harris County residents. Texans. Please keep wearing your mask and avoiding gatherings. This is all on us now,” said one Twitter user.
The Mayor of Houston chimed in, condemning Abbott’s decision. “Texas keeps making national news for the wrong reasons: an electric grid that failed systemwide throughout the state and rolling back the mask order when 88% of Texans are not vaccinated. We are better than this. Leadership matters. st,” he said.
“Gov. Greg Abbott suffered political wounds from the blackout and water crisis so he salves them by lifting all covid restrictions and declaring Texas a big ol’ Party Zone. His irresponsible action puts the whole country in unnecessary danger,” said The Washington Post columnist and MSNBC analyst Eugene Robinson.
All our Texas peeps, are y’all doing okay? We are praying for you.
I just announced Texas is OPEN 100%.

I decided to move back to Texas when Covid broke out because I thought it would be safer here.

From the same Abbott who could not get TX PPE when needed, couldn’t get testing when needed, couldn’t get vaccine when promised, today we got an Abbott who still cannot follow medical science. With 44,000 TX COVID deaths already under his “leadership,” Abbott assures more to come
