Ride-share service Lyft has joined Uber in banning a woman who went viral for coughing on and attacking an Uber driver. According to Uber, the driver refused service to the woman and her friends after picking them up in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood because they refused to wear masks.
The ban follows a video on social media where she blames the driver for the incident and threatens to sue Uber. During the video, she proclaims, “That’s why I take Lyft!” Well, not anymore. She’s now been banned from both ride-share apps.
“Although this incident did not involve the Lyft platform, the unacceptable treatment of the driver in this video compelled us to permanently remove the rider from the Lyft community,” Lyft wrote in a tweet. “Driving in a pandemic is not easy. Please wear a mask, respect one another, and be a good person.”
In the original video, the girl and her friends become combative with the driver, identified as 32-year-old Subhakar Khadka, after telling the maskless passenger to put on a mask. Khadka eventually cancels the ride asks them to get out of the car. They refuse, with one telling him, “You are not letting us out in the middle of the freeway.”
The situation escalates until one of the passengers coughs on the driver, grabs his cellphone off the dash, and rips his mask off. According to the outlet, San Francisco police said one woman sprayed what is believed to be pepper spray into the vehicle after exiting the car at a gas station.
