A North Little Rock elementary school teacher has been accused of making a kindergarten student use his hands to take toilet paper out of a clogged toilet with feces in it.
Ashley Murry, the boy’s mother, said her 5-year-old told her about the incident over the weekend. Since he had used so much toilet paper, his teacher at Crystal Hill Elementary School allegedly ordered him to clean out the toilet with his hands. Murry said that she was taken aback when he told her and that it has clearly troubled her son.
“This is unacceptable,” she declared.
Ashley claims that the instructor directly called her. She said, “She got on the phone with me and said she didn’t have an explanation; she just knew she was wrong.” Then Ashley said, “she stated to the principal that she was trying to teach how not to stop up the toilet.”
On Monday, Murry met with the principal and requested that her son be transferred to a different class. She said that his instructor had expressed regret. Murry, on the other hand, claimed that she is seeking more than an apology.
“I feel like she needs to be trained, suspended, or terminated or something because that’s unacceptable,” she said. “I want my son to be in a safe environment, a good environment.”
According to a statement released by the Pulaski County Special School District on Tuesday, the teacher has been put on unpaid leave.
According to the release, “employees around the district work hard every day to build an atmosphere where students feel secure and protected.”
Tami Murry, the boy’s grandmother, wrote on Facebook that the teacher did it to degrade and belittle him, either because he is Black or that she dislikes him.
“I don’t know if it’s racism or pure dislike for him, but something isn’t right,” the post read.
“I don’t want to say it is or isn’t,” Ashley said when asked if the incident had anything to do with her son’s race.
The mother of another Crystal Hill Elementary School kindergartener said her daughter experienced the same thing in the fall with a different teacher. According to her mother, the girl used so much toilet paper and was asked to take it out with her bare hands. She approached the school board, which informed her that an investigation would be conducted.
“This is a common occurrence at this school, it seems,” the mother, who asked to remain anonymous, said. “I told them, ‘I pay my taxes so you can have janitors at the school, not kids unclogging toilets.'”
