In the last couple of weeks we’ve watched underinflated footballs go from a harmless, overlooked issue to a full-blown scandal. But it looks like some things are beginning to unfold.
Spectators originally assumed Colts linebacker, D’Qwell Jackson, was the insight of the deflated balls used during their AFC Championship game against New England. (Jackson had intercepted a ball in the second quarter.) ESPN.com reports that tips surrounding the incorrectly measured equipment had actually derived from Colts GM, Ryan Grigson. The source was confirmed by NFL Football Operations Chief, Troy Vincent. Where Grigson may have developed or acquired this observation, is unknown. The league has still not released any information on the ongoing investigation other than there being evidence supporting that the Patriots, more than likely, had something to do with the deflated balls.
In his Super Bowl pregame interview (previously taped) with Bob Costas, Patriots QB, Tom Brady made a somewhat, suspicious – if you will – statement that didn’t exactly help his case. After semi-avoiding questions revolving the fiasco, Brady reminded viewers that he’d already addressed the issue and that “all the facts will come out after the Super Bowl.” “However those facts come out, that will be news to me as well,” he added. Of course, commentators side-eyed this explanation, some voicing that they still reject the belief that Brady had no knowledge of the deflated balls.
Reports about the inquest began with a broadcast made by Indianapolis WTHR’s, Bob Kravitz. Kravitz, known for his wide array of extremely credible sources, disclosed the story immediately following the game. He, like most of us, took the offense to be minor but had yet to discover what he had just made public.
If the outcome of this investigation notes that the league knew who deflated the balls and refrained from punishing the Patriots just so we could witness a good game, I can only imagine the uproar from not only fans, but owners and players. The favor of Robert Kraft and his team will be so blatant that I see a force of change happening all the way up to the C-Level.
The NFL has Executive VP, Jeff Pash, accompanied by Ted Wells (lawyer) heading the investigation.
