The owner of the South Carolina convenience store that sold a record Mega Millions jackpot ticket in 2018 has been charged with tax evasion, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
Chirag, 49, owns KC Mart in Simpsonville. Officials say he is accused of underreporting sales at the store from 2013 through 2017, including about $2 million in unreported sales and roughly $123,000 in unpaid sales tax. He faces five counts of tax evasion, and if convicted, each count carries up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine, according to Fox News.
The store made headlines in October 2018 when it sold a $1.537 billion Mega Millions ticket. The Greenville News reported that the winner took a lump sum of about $877.8 million and that the store received a $50,000 bonus for selling the ticket. Reports note that the tax case is unrelated to the jackpot sale.
The charges are allegations, and no response from Chirag was reported.
