A Facebook page that seemingly belonged to a Georgia sheriff’s office spokesman assisting in the investigation of the recent massage parlor slayings promoted a T-shirt that contained racist language about China.
According to Yahoo! News, the Facebook account under the name “Jay Baker” featured numerous photos of the same Jay Baker that works as the Cherokee County sheriff’s Captain.
The account that was deleted Wednesday night featured many posts on the page dating back months, which showed Jay Baker’s pictures while in uniform outside of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office.
News outlets report that the page also included a post promoting a t-shirt with racist language about China and the Coronavirus in March of 2020. The post showed T-shirts with the words, “Covid-19 -Imported Virus From China” with the caption, “Place your order while they last,” alongside a smiley face emoji.
Baker has already come under fire for his public comments about the white male shooter who allegedly targeted Asian Americans in a slew of shootings.
Baker said on Wednesday that the 21-year-old man accused of carrying out the shooting massacres had had a “bad day.”
“He was pretty much fed up and kind of end of his rope, and yesterday was a really bad day for him, and this is what he did,” he said during a news conference.
Asian American activists are outraged and have said that Baker’s comments and the now-deleted Facebook post undermine public confidence that investigators can adequately address Tuesday’s atrocities.
