A sister and brother duo are now behind bars after Tennessee police charged them in the 2019 death of their disabled mother.

According to PEOPLE, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said that a Washington County grand jury indicted Michael Murray, 40, and his sister, Karen Murray, 45, on first-degree murder charges.

In August 2019, Ken Baldwin, First Judicial District Attorney, requested that the TBI launch an investigation into allegations of abuse and neglect involving Sheila Murray, 68, after being hospitalized.

She later died.

Following her death, Special Agents from the agency and investigators from the Johnson City Police Department and Adult Protective Service started their probe of the case.

“During the course of the investigation, authorities determined that Michael Murray and Karen Murray, the victim’s children, were responsible for the abuse and neglect that resulted in her death,” the TBI says in the statement.

Authorities have not released the exact nature of the abuse.

After the grand jury returned the siblings’ indictments, they were both arrested and booked into the Washington County Jail on a $250,000 bond each.
