One of Donald Trump‘s former lawyers, Sidney Powell, is trying to get a huge defamation lawsuit against her dismissed.
Powell is being sued by election software company Dominion Voting Systems for $1.3 billion for defamation after she made baseless claims that Dominion rigged the election to let Joe Biden win.
She filed a move to dismiss on Monday and argued that “no reasonable person” would believe that her statements about Dominion “were truly statements of fact.”
“Given the highly charged and political context of the statements, it is clear that Powell was describing the facts on which she based the lawsuits she filed in support of President Trump,” Powell’s lawyers wrote in the filing.
“Indeed, Plaintiffs themselves characterize the statements at issue as ‘wild accusations’ and ‘outlandish claims.’ They are repeatedly labelled ‘inherently improbable’ and even ‘impossible.’ Such characterizations of the allegedly defamatory statements further support Defendants’ position that reasonable people would not accept such statements as fact but view them only as claims that await testing by the courts through the adversary process.”
Powell made headlines for standing by Trump’s side and making bizarre claims and spewing conspiracy theories, including that Dominion had dark ties to Venezuela.
The company said her statements “caused unprecedented harm”.
