A woman struggling with addiction practically vanished after a relapse and ended up wandering through tunnels in the sewer system for 3 weeks before she was rescued and pulled from a storm drain with no clothes on.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, a passerby who had parked her car in Delray Beach overheard the woman’s screams coming from the storm drain below and immediately called for help.
Authorities are still trying to piece together how that woman got stuck in the storm drain and verify if she was really wandering through the tunnels underground for three weeks: how did she survive down there for that long?
Delray Beach Mayor Shelly Petrolia is pushing for answers.
“I know they are trying to find out if the story does match,” Petrolia said on Wednesday. “The story is so bizarre. But people should know better than to go into the sewer system. This is not the action of a rational person,” she explained.
The woman is said to have a history of mental issues and drug abuse. But her family is just thankful that the passer-by found her and that emergency services could rescue her. The woman, released from the hospital Tuesday, is now back at home with her mother recuperating. “Obviously, the victim has been through a very traumatic situation and needs time to heal,” family friend Michael Hahn said.
