A Florida high school reading teacher has been arrested and is accused of sexually abusing a student over several years, according to police and an arrest report cited by the Daily Mail.
Jeanette, 41, worked in Hialeah schools in Miami-Dade County for about 20 years. The Daily Mail reports she faces multiple charges, including offenses against students by an authority figure, engaging in a sexual act with a child, and several counts of lewd and lascivious battery involving a child.
According to the arrest report, the alleged victim told police the relationship began when she was 14 and a middle school student in 2009 and continued until she turned 18 and was in high school. Authorities allege the teacher acted as a mother figure, gave the girl financial help, signed her out of school without her mother’s permission, and excused her from other classes so they could be alone.
Police say three other former students have also come forward with allegations. Their accounts have not been tested in court.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools said in a statement that it is “deeply disturbed about the allegations.” The district said she was removed from the school setting as soon as the claims surfaced, that Miami-Dade Schools Police opened an investigation, and that it will terminate her employment. It was not clear whether she had an attorney who could comment. These are allegations, not findings of guilt.
