A Texas mother has been charged with capital murder in the death of her 6 year old son. Prosecutors allege she gave him a toxic mix of drugs to collect on life insurance policies.
According to People and the Child Protective Services report, young Jason and his 4 year old sister were staying at their grandfather’s townhouse last summer when they were sick. The children’s mother, Ashley, reportedly stopped by over several days to give them medicine. CPS says Jason took what she offered while his sister refused.
The report says Jason then became seriously ill, with vomiting and hallucinations. The grandfather told investigators he contacted the mother repeatedly over two days, but medical help was not sought as the boy got worse. Jason was found unresponsive on June 27, 2020, and was pronounced dead. According to the autopsy report, methamphetamine and cocaine were found in his system.
Ashley, 25, works as a life insurance agent and was arrested on Wednesday. Harris County Assistant District Attorney Gilbert Sawtelle said she took out two life insurance policies on her son a month before his death. “I believe she poisoned her child to cash in on two life insurance policies,” he said.
She is being held without bond and is due back in court on Monday. She has not been convicted, and the charge is an allegation that will be decided in court.
Jason’s family remembers him as a smart, caring first grader who loved toy cars and dressing up as a cowboy. His father, Mario, said, “I just want to wake up and say it was all a dream.” Jason’s younger sister is now living with her father.
