Police Don’t Suspect Hate Crime In Connection With Asian Woman Fatally Stabbed

On Saturday morning, an Asian woman was fatally stabbed while walking her dogs in Riverside, California.

Authorities are now saying they don’t believe the murder was a hate crime, CNN reported.

The incident happened on Golden Avenue in the city’s La Sierra neighborhood. Authorities received multiple calls about a woman suffering from stab wounds. Upon arrival, police found Ke Chieh Meng, 64, bleeding from her abdomen area.

She was taken to a nearby hospital but died from her injuries.

Not long after the stabbing, police received more calls from neighbors in, reporting that “a transient woman walking through their yards and appearing suspicious,” Riverside police stated.

Officers went out to the location and arrested 23-year-old Darlene Stephanie Montoya of Monterey Park in Los Angeles County.

“When our detectives interviewed the suspect, they didn’t come across anything to suggest she attacked the victim due to her race,” Riverside Police spokesperson Officer Ryan Railsback said.

Police believe Meng was randomly confronted as she walked her two dogs that morning and was stabbed by Montoya, who fled the scene.

She is detained without bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder, weapons violation, and being under the influence of an illegal substance.

She was also arrested on March 30 by the same police department for attacking another woman with a skateboard near a shopping mall.

She was released following the assault on a “notice to appear” citation.
