HBO Game of Thrones Cancelled Spinoffs Could Still Happen

HBO is always on the lookout for the next big thing. Is the answer Game of Thrones-esque? HBO signed a new five-year contract with George R.R. Martin in late March 2021, after initially revealing plans for several spinoffs, only to cancel all of them except House of the Dragon.

So, could this mean that any of the Game of Thrones spinoffs that were canceled could be revived? The response, according to the writer of one of the canceled series, is… maybe.

The interviewers couldn’t resist asking screenwriter Max Borenstein about his new film, Godzilla vs. Kong, a few questions about his vision for Game of Thrones’ history (and future), including whether Martin’s HBO deal could bring his series back.

Borenstein tells Inverse, “I’m very passionate about the one that I did.” He said, “I hope perhaps one day it’ll happen.”

Borenstein’s Game of Thrones spinoff is shrouded in mystery, and he refused to reveal the plot or setting to us. However, in 2018, a leak on the Game of Thrones fan wiki claimed to have revealed the truth.

Borenstein’s prequel series was allegedly set in Valyria (the ancestral home of House Targaryen). It would have happened in the years leading up to the Doom of Valyria, a cataclysmic occurrence alluded to but never completely described in Martin’s books.

To put it another way, the Doom of Valyria is a juicy mystery in the Game of Thrones universe, and Borenstein’s series may be able to solve it.
