The Prince Estate and Sony’s Legacy Recordings announced the release of the late artist’s “Welcome 2 America” album on July 30th.
According to Variety, the album was initially recorded in 2010 but was never released and features Prince covering songs by other artists like Bob Dylan and Janet Jackson.
The announcement describes the project as “a powerful creative statement that documents Prince’s concerns, hopes, and visions for a shifting society, presciently foreshadowing an era of political division, disinformation, and a renewed fight for racial justice.”
The “Welcome 2 America” album also features in-studio collaborations with bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, drummer Chris Coleman, GRAMMY-nominated engineer Jason Agel, and New Power Generation singers Shelby J., Liv Warfield, and Elisa Fiorillo and keyboardist Morris Hayes.
Jon Wertheim, a correspondent for “60 Minutes”, got a preview of the album as well as the story behind the music for a report airing this Sunday on CBS.
