Georgia State Representative Park Cannon’s lawyer says the lawmaker will not face any charges.
Cannon was arrested in March while protesting Georgia’s controversial election law, CNN reported.
Cannon and her attorney, Gerald Griggs, learned of the decision via phone call on Wednesday and said the news was “emotional.”
“Facts and evidence showed to the world that Rep. Cannon committed no crime and should not have ever been arrested,” Griggs posted on Twitter. “We thank the district attorney for her thorough review of the evidence and are weighing our next legal actions,” he added.
Fulton County District attorney Fani Willis considers the case closed following the review of evidence that she said she would not present to a grand jury. The office confirmed its decision to CNN as well, saying Cannon would not face prosecution.
Cannon reacted to the decision quoting Griggs’ tweet with the hashtag “#KeepKnocking.”
Cannon was arrested on March 25 and removed from the state’s Capitol after she repeatedly knocked on Republican Governor Brian Kemp’s office door as he signed the election bill.
She was transported to the Fulton County Jail and released later that night.
The arrest affidavit showed she faced charges of felony obstruction and disrupting a General Assembly session. She was also accused of “stomping” on a Georgia State Patrol Officer’s foot while being apprehended and as she was being escorted off the property. If convicted, she could have faced up to eight years in prison.
“The facts and the evidence, as we know them, are inconsistent with what the allegations are in that report,” Griggs told CNN’s Don Lemon in an interview last week.
