42-year-old Jonathan Pentland, an army sergeant reportedly based in Fort Jackson, South Carolina has been suspended from his military duties following his assault on a young Black man.
A viral video shows Pentland aggressively attacking the young Black man and shoving him.
According to TMZ, the SGT. saw the young man walking in the neighborhood but didn’t recognize him. He then got in the man’s face before pushing him.
Pentland was arrested on Wednesday morning on assault and battery charges.
The video shows the Black man remaining calm in the unfortunate situation as he repeatedly said he was just passing through the area that he lived in.
Pentland and others recording the altercation continued to press the young man.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the young man was accused of starting altercations in a threatening manner with neighbors of the area. Consequently, the altercation between the man and Pentland began after someone supposedly asked the SGT. to help.
A judge reviewed the video footage of Pentland’s encounter and found sufficient evidence to arrest him, TMZ reported.
The victim apparently has an underlying medical condition that possibly affected his behavior that day. Authorities are trying to get him the help he needs so that he doesn’t have to go through the criminal justice system.
