Colorism, Shadism, Favoritism… however you word it, the reality of discrimination based on skin color is ever so prevalent in the African American Community.
The #TeamLightSkin and #TeamDarkSkin nonsense spawned out of the African American community’s silence on issues that affect our race as a whole.
Oprah Winfrey and Bill Duke are back again to tackle the issue of color in the African American community, this time from the vantage point of the ‘light girl’.
In 2011, director Bill Duke aired the film “Dark Girls” on Oprah’s OWN channel to discuss the beauty, struggles and reality of being a dark girl. Now, “Light Girls” will address the plight of the lighter skinned woman.
The trailers below show familiar faces like Essence Atkins, Keke Wyatt, Chante Moore, Erica Hubbard, and Raven Symone tell their stories of growing up as a light girl.
This will be an interesting discussion, and hopefully both films “Light Girls” and “Dark Girls” will help mend the gap between all shades of color and allow the African American Community to finally heal those open wounds.
“Light Girls” premiers tonight, January 19, 2015 at 9P|8C OWN. Watch the trailer below.
