Los Angeles Mayor Proposes Anti-Poverty Program That Would Give Cash To Residents

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti proposed an anti-poverty program that would give $1,000 in cash to thousands of residents in the coming months.

The proposal for a $24 million “Basic Income Guaranteed” would provide $1,000 a month to 2,000 Los Angeles families for a year with no strings attached.

Several Mayors across the country have proposed similar “universal basic income” programs, which are meant to provide a monthly stipend to a small pool of residents in that city. So far, programs have been launched in Stockton, and Jackson, Miss., and other cities are looking into how they can offer similar initiatives to their residents.

Garcetti is a member of a small group of Mayors who support a Basic Guaranteed Income. The group launched last year and advocates for a guaranteed income at the local, state, and federal levels.

“Too many Americans are one missed paycheck away from an eviction or being unable to put food on the table — and that was true long before COVID-19,” Garcetti said in a statement when the group “Mayors for a Basic Guaranteed Income” originally launched.

The mayor’s budget still requires approval by the City Council.
