Congratulations are in order for soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or Award earlier today, affirming his position as the best soccer player in the world. The Ballon d’Or, which means ‘Golden Ball’ in French, is awarded to the player who has had the best performance throughout the year based on the votes of national team coaches and captains as well as journalists. The FIFA ceremony took place in Zurich, Switzerland and was attended by many soccer greats and other big stars. Ronaldo beat out fellow world class soccer stars Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer to win the coveted award. This is his second consecutive Ballon d’Or award and third overall, having won his first in 2008.
Ronaldo, a Portugese native, currently plays for the Real Madrid football club. In 2014, Ronaldo scored a total of 61 goals over the course of 60 games; 56 of those goals were scored for Real Madrid while the other 5 were scored for Portugal, including one goal in the World Cup. On top of that, he also broke a record in 2014 for most hat tricks ever scored in La Liga.
The award was definitely well deserved. Congrats boo!!
