There are growing concerns that MS-13 and other gang members are hiding in the waves of Mexican and Central American immigrants crossing into the United States. U.S. Border Patrol Agent Chief Matthew Hudak tweeted Friday that five gang members were detained in one week at the Laredo, Texas crossing.Â
A member of the violent MS-13 street gang was detained, and two members of the 18th Street gang were also stopped. “They attempt to evade arrest by exploiting the influx of migrants attempting to enter our country,” Hudak wrote.
MS-13, also called Mara Salvatrucha, has origins tied to immigrant communities in Los Angeles. The gang has spread across the country, with a large population located on Long Island in New York. The gang’s motto is said to be “metta, viola, controla,” or “kill, rape, control.”
According to the New York Post, More than 172,000 migrants crossed into the U.S. in March. Similar numbers of immigrants are expected for April, according to the Border Patrol.
