The Middlesex District Attorney‘s office is investigating the death of 16-year-old Mikayla Miller in Hopkinton. Her family claims that the authorities are withholding information from them.
Mikayla’s body was discovered on April 18, hanging from a tree along a path off West Main Street that leads back to the apartments where she lived.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan told WBZ-TV, “This is just an unimaginable loss.”
Mikayla’s mother sparked a social media firestorm in the days after her death with a post accusing police of turning a blind eye to the kids she claims abused, ambushed, and murdered her daughter.
It was a post that sparked outrage online, with many claiming the teen was “lynched” because she was Black, gay, or both.
Ryan said, “The idea that we would be not investigating bullying or a murder, as the allegation, is just not true.”
Mikayla was a student-athlete at Hopkinton High, a predominantly white school. While the DA’s office initially stated that her death was not suspicious, possibly implying that she committed suicide, she did admit that a relationship breakup the day before sparked a battle.
The candlelight vigil and rally will be held for her on Thursday and is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. on East Main Street, near the Boston Marathon starting line.
