Police are now looking at Toronto rapper Top5 after they upgraded charges to first-degree murder following a 20-year-old college student’s killing back in January.
The rapper, whose real name is Hassan Ali, allegedly opened fire on Hashim Omar Hashi, who was in a car trying to enter an underground parking garage on January 31.
Investigators claim Ali approached the passenger side of a vehicle Hashi was in and shot him several times. Hashi was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police arrested Ali and another man in February in connection with the shooting. The 22-year-old rapper was initially charged with accessory after the fact, along with six other offenses, including several for drug possession.
Ali was released from custody the following month and was living under strict house arrest with electronic tagging, but he allegedly cut off the ankle monitor and went on the run after he was asked to turn himself in.
