President Joe Biden will host the family of George Floyd on the anniversary of his killing.

The family will join the President at the White House today, to commemorate the first anniversary of his death, which sparked international Black Lives Matter protests last year.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki would not offer the details regarding what the family would be discussing and Biden. However, many have noted that the timing of the meeting coincides with Congress discussions surrounding a police reform bill known as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Biden had previously set the anniversary of Floyd’s murder as the deadline for the law’s passing, though talks have been delayed.

The act would prohibit chokeholds by federal officers and cease qualified protection for officers against civil lawsuits. If passed, the bill will also create national standards for policing in a manner that fosters accountability. In March, The House version of the bill was passed but now faces an uphill battle in the Senate.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty in April for murdering George Floyd on May 25th, 2020.
