In Elizabeth City, North Carolina, a white woman was arrested for allegedly driving into two Black women who were peacefully protesting the police killing of Andrew Brown Jr.

Lisa Michelle O’Quinn, 41, has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon using a motor vehicle, one count of careless and reckless conduct, and one count of unsafe movement. The police are also investigating whether this was a hate crime.

Michelle Fleming Morris and Valerie Lindsey, the two women O’Quinn hit, were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being released. The two were among a group of people who demanded answers about Brown’s death on Monday evening.

On Twitter, a video appears to show O’Quinn’s car hitting the two women.

The Elizabeth City Police Department said in a statement on Tuesday, “The police department is currently investigating this matter, and we will be presenting facts and findings in this case to include potential aggravating factors for criminal enhancements for potential sentencing purposes of a hate crime involving this event.”

O’Quinn is being held in a local jail on a $40,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Thursday.
