One firefighter was fatally shot and another wounded by an off-duty firefighter during a shooting at Los Angeles County Fire Department station Tuesday morning. The station is located in Agua Dulce, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.
During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Fire Chief Osby said a 44-year old male who had worked with the department for more than 20 years had been killed. A 54-year-old captain was also shot and was airlifted to Henry Mayo Hospital. He is listed in critical but stable condition.
“It is with a heavy heart that I stand here and say that one of our firefighter specialists succumbed to his injuries,” he said.
Osby revealed the shooter was an off-duty firefighter who was not scheduled to work on Tuesday. After the shooting, he went back to his home in Acton and barricaded himself inside before setting it on fire.
Authorities responded to the fire and found a body in the yard with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The coroner has not yet confirmed the identity of the body or the cause of death.
Sources told ABC7 the shooting resulted from an ongoing dispute between the gunman and his victim.
