“Chlorine Karens” took the internet by storm when they were caught on camera berating a female couple who were kissing at a hotel pool.
The incident unfolded on Sunday at the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel in Sacramento, California. The angry Karens confronted a female couple for smooching in front of children present in the pool. Domonique Veasley, one of the women who were making out, told CBS 13 that she felt they were singled out because they were gay. She noted that straight couples who were being affectionate in the pool were not asked to stop.
“My initial reaction for the children was ‘Oh yeah,’ and then I was like ‘You are asking me to stop being me,'” she explained to the news station. “This is not OK anymore. It’s 2021.”
As the angry Karens were leaving, they began arguing with other patrons, who chanted “Shame” at them. One of the women, identified as “Deb,” can be heard in the viral video saying, “I have never met anyone like you guys. Are you kidding me?”
Deb goes on to add, “I have never been more embarrassed in my life for the human race. I am a Jewish woman from New Jersey. You’re a disgusting piece of s***.”
Terry Fahn, a lawyer for the pair of Karens, says that they eventually left the pool area out of fear for their safety, despite earlier reports indicating that security had thrown them out. He says that his client’s actions had nothing to do with racism or homophobia. Instead, he feels that they confronted the couple due to their sexual interactions in the proximity of children.
The Kimpton Sawyer Hotel issued a statement via their general manager, Nikki Carlson, saying that discrimination or verbal assault of any kind is not tolerated at the hotel.
