A South Carolina prosecutor has died two days after his grandson and daughter-in-law were found dead on his family’s land located in Colleton County.
According to ABC News, Randolph Murdaugh III’s death was announced by his law firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick on Thursday.
The firm did not say how he died, but Democratic State Senator Margie Bright Matthews of Colleton County said the 81-year-old was in intensive care and asked for prayers for his family from the Senate floor.
Murdaugh’s death Thursday came the day before the graveside service for his 22-year-old grandson Paul Murdaugh and Paul’s mother, 52-year-old Maggie Murdaugh.
The mother and her son were found shot close to dog kennels on the family home.
Little details surrounding the deaths have been released, but the State Law Enforcement Division is looking into the case.
The Murdaughs is one of South Carolina’s most prominent legal families.
Paul Murdaugh had an upcoming trial surrounding a boating under the influence charge, which caused the death of Mallory Beach, 19, who was killed in the 2019 crash.
