Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine Are Opening A Magnet School In Los Angeles

Dr. Dre is teaming up with Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine to open a public high school in Los Angeles.

Plans for the school, currently being called “Regional High School No. 1,” were approved this month by the Los Angeles Board of Education. Regional High will be located at Audubon Middle School in Leimert Park in South L.A., with transportation being offered to children who did not live nearby.

“This is for kids who want to go out and start their own company or go work at a place…like Marvel or Apple or companies like that,” Iovine told Los Angeles Times reporter Howard Blume.

As for rapper turned music mogul Dr. Dre, he hopes that the school will “excite the kids and make them want to go to school.”

The school will be a “magnet,” which means that students from across the wide-spreading district may apply. The school is one of 10 magnets that was approved last week by the school board.

Iovine stressed that while Regional High is “nowhere near a music school,” there will be a focus on student creativity.

With enrollment in magnet programs declining nearly 2% yearly in Los Angeles, school Superintendent Austin Beutner said the district is looking to find innovative and more engaging programs. He says that the Dr. Dre-Iovine school could spawn “the coolest high school in America.”

Regional High School No. 1 is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2022.
