Medical History Moment Made: Man Breaks Penis During Sex, Says It “Buckled”

Well, someone wasn’t able to get it on for a while.

According to the New York Post, a man living in the UK broke his penis. He accidentally snapped his penis lengthwise during a disastrous sex session.

“We present the first documented case of a vertical penile fracture…sustained by a 40-year-old man during sexual intercourse,” reads the groundbreaking case study published this week in the British Medical Journal.

Medical officials believe he “buckled” his penis against his partner’s perineum, which is the area located between the anus and genitals that is possibly the result of an ill-timed thrust.

A broken penis occurs when a man ruptures the “rubbery sheath of tissue below the skin that allows the penis to increase in width and length to produce a firm erection,” Healthline reported. It usually occurs when a man is at full mast.

This can cause one to feel as if he has broken a bone.

A study found that “up to 88.5% of penile fractures occur during sexual intercourse, with a 20-year retrospective study finding that ‘doggy style’ and ‘man on top’ are the two leading sexual positions that endanger penises.

But the anonymous man’s case is unique, considering he experienced only minor swelling and not the “popping” sound, rolling of the skin, and other symptoms typically associated with phallic fractures.

His MRI scans following the injury revealed that his penis had a 3-centimeter-long (1-inch) vertical tear — rather than the more common horizontal variety — along the right side of the shaft.

Surgeons had to treat the injury within 24 hours to suffer permanent complications, such as erectile dysfunction. He has since fully recovered and was able to have sex six months later.

He was also able to achieve “erections of the same quality to those before the injury, denying any penile curvature or significant palpable scarring.”
