Subway Will Add 20 New Menu Items This Month For Its Eat Fresh Refresh Initiative

Subway is adding 20 new menu items on July 13, 2021.

This is the largest menu update that the company has had in its 55-year history. Subway restaurants will shut down on July 12, 2021, to roll out the new menu for its Eat Fresh Refresh initiative.

The menu will feature six new sandwiches, four upgraded signature sandwiches, and two new baked breads.

“We wanted to give our guests more new and improved flavors,” Trevor Haynes, Subway’s North American President, said. “Our new culinary team is delivering monumental updates to the entire core menu…to excited new and returning guests.”

Last month, the fast-food sandwich chain drew criticism after a New York Times investigation found that the company does not use “premium 100 percent tuna” in its tuna sandwiches. Two customers in California filed a lawsuit against the company in January alleging that tuna used in Subway sandwiches is fake.

“While many of Subway’s core protein choices were improved as part of the Eat Fresh Refresh, one ingredient that doesn’t need an upgrade is the Subway high-quality, premium tuna,” Subway said in a statement posted to its website.

“Subway sources tuna from leading global food suppliers that have a reputation for working diligently with food safety and quality experts to ensure consistent, high-quality products at every stage of the supply chain. The 100% wild-caught tuna remains a fan favorite among sub lovers.”

Subway maintains says that “DNA testing is simply not a reliable way to identify denatured proteins, like Subway’s tuna, which was cooked before it was tested.”
