A Black TikToker is raising awareness about the platform censoring Black Lives Matter posts.
Ziggi Tyler, who currently has over 370,000 followers on TikTok, made several videos that detailed how phrases such as “Black Lives Matter,” “Black people,” “Black voices,” and “Pro Black” were flagged as inappropriate when he tried adding them to his bio. Even more disturbing is that once he added racist phrases such as “pro-white,” “supporting supremacy,” “neo-Nazi,” and “anti-Semitic,” he was not flagged.
“White people can get on here and call me the N-word and make videos about violent extremism, but I can’t do anything,” Tyler explained in one of his videos. “We can’t do anything.”
The backlash spread quickly, causing a TikTok representative to immediately issue a statement clarifying that the warnings were the results of an “inaccurate algorithm setting.” The rep stated to NBC News that Black Lives Matter “does not violate our policies and currently has over 27B views on our platform.”
In recent weeks, Black creators have called out TikTok numerous times and have gone on a “strike” from creating viral dance videos out of frustration for their lack of acknowledgment in mainstream media.
