Democrats in New York are accusing Chick-fil-A of discrimination and are calling for the restaurant to be banned at rest stops.
Lawmakers in New York are pushing against plants to open Chick-fil-A locations near rest stops in the state, following the food chain’s past with donating money to anti-LGBTQIA groups. “Chick-fil-A, through the charitable wing of its business, has a history of donating millions of dollars to organizations that are discriminatory and anti-LGBTQ organizations,” Democratic Rochester-area Assemblymember Harry Bronson said, Fox Business reports.
The petition Bronson is launching wants to block Chick-fil-A from establishing restaurants along I-90 in connection to the Thruway Authority’s upcoming service-state project that will reportedly cost $450 million.
“After years of millions in donations to organizations hostile to LGBTQ+ rights, the decision to approve @ ChickfilA as an approved concession at our rest stops is concerning, to say the least,” said Bronson, who is openly gay. “It’s time the @ NYSThruway re-examine this choice,” he wrote in a tweet.
“It’s on state thruway authority property, and they are leasing it, so it’s, in essence, the state saying, ‘We are going to offer them an opportunity for them to earn millions and millions of dollars,’ even though we know what the history is,” Bronson added.
