Federal authorities arrested five family members in Texas for their participation in the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
According to CNN, investigators are going to great lengths to track down suspects and using social media posts to build their cases.
Officials looked at Facebook and uncovered posts from the family patriarch Thomas “Tom” Munn, in which he called on people to visit the Capitol building on Jan. 6th as former President Trump had instructed.
The Justice Department said that Munn had used social media to encourage people to travel to DC in the weeks before the riot. In a Facebook post from December, Tom Munn wrote, “Our President has only asked two things from us, so far… #1 Vote #2 January 6, 2021.” In another post, he wrote, “The time has come!”
Authorities believe Munn, his spouse, Dawn, and their three children Kristi, Josh, and Kay, drove from Texas to DC the day before the riot to help “Stop the Steal.”
Investigators also received tips about posts on Kristi’s Facebook page that showed her and other family members posing for a photo in camouflage outfits. The caption of the photo said: “Washington D.C., here we come !!! #StopTheSteal #TrumpisMyPresident.”
Authorities didn’t charge a sixth family member who attended the trip to the Capitol on January 6th, presumably because they are a minor.
