A Wisconsin man reported his parents missing and then was accused of being their killer after his father was found dismembered.
Last Wednesday, 23-year-old Chandler Halderson called the Dane County Sheriff‘s Office to report that his father and mother disappeared from their Oak Springs Circle home on July 1. Halderson’s parents are Krista Halderson, 53, and Bart Halderson, 50, PEOPLE reports. A day went by, and that’s when police found the torso of Bart’s body in Cottage Grove.
According to police reports, Halderson was seen there driving his car in reverse “with the rear hatch open in a field near a wooded area,” the probable cause statement says, PEOPLE reports.
Police arrested Halderson last Thursday after growing skeptical of his story. Before his arrest, police said they believed Halderson fatally shot and dismembered his father’s body. They also said the man allegedly lied to them about his parents disappearing. Halderson is being held at the Dane County Jail on a $10,000 bond. Police arrested him on a tentative felony charge of providing false information in a missing person investigation.
Online jail records show that three new tentative felony counts were added to his charges, including mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse, and intentional first-degree homicide, PEOPLE reports. Halderson’s mother “remains a missing person.”
