El Chapo’s Former Safe House to be Raffled Off in Mexico for $12.50 a Ticket

The two-bedroom safe house where former Sinaloa cartel leader, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, fled when authorities tried to arrest him in 2014 will be raffled off by the Mexican government.

The northwest Mexico home is worth about $184,000 and can be yours for a whopping 250 pesos or $12.50 U.S. dollars. The home, which is modest on the outside, but inside is equipped with a top-notch security system and bathtub fitted with hydraulics which assisted El Chapo’s 2014 escape, will be raffled by the government on September 15, one day before Mexican Independence Day.

But that’s not all. The Mexican government is also raffling off many other seized properties of former drug kingpins and corrupt politicians, including a mansion valued at nearly $4 million previously owned by a leader of the Juárez Cartel. Other prizes also include a ranch, apartments, and beachfront properties.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced last month that raised funds are set to fund social programs. Sadly, only citizens will be allowed to own any of the assets on the beach or the border. Foreigners who win will be paid out in cash, which we’re not mad at either.
