Renowned Television-Producer, Screenwriter, and Author Shonda Rhimes’ decision to leave ABC has landed her a big deal. Rhimes signed an agreement with Netflix for $300 million after being with the digital steaming platform giant since 2017.
According to reports, Rhimes’ contract is expanded and includes a variety of new projects. The new agreement with Netflix involves creating virtual reality, gaming content, and films. The contract also has a branding and merchandising deal for Shondaland Media. This means Rhimes haves the capacity to do live events and experiences. The contract with Netflix spans an additional five years with double earnings.
When Rhimes took her high-caliber talents to Netflix in 2017, she signed a deal that was reportedly between $100 million and $150 million. Today, her contract is between $300 million to $400 million.
“When Ted [Sarandos] and I decided to break the traditional network TV business model to move Shondaland to Netflix, we were both taking a leap into the unknown,” Rhimes reportedly said in a statement. “Today, Shondaland at Netflix is creatively thriving, profitable as an asset and engaging audiences around the world with stories that fearlessly challenge viewers and keep them highly entertained all at once.”
The huge success of Rhimes’ Netflix original series ‘Bridgerton’ played an intricate part in this big endeavor. The series has been reportedly renewed for 3 additional seasons.
Rhimes reportedly stated that she decided to make the big move from ABC to Netflix so she can create without being “bothered.”
“The reason I came to Netflix because I wanted to be able to make television without anybody bothering me … and as long as I get to keep making television without anybody bothering me, I’m happy.”
