The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Department warned U.S. citizens against traveling to the United Kingdom as COVID-19 cases surge.
Both agencies raised their alert levels for the U.K. to Level 4, which is the highest. At that level, it is suggested to avoid travel to that region. The recommendation not to travel to the country extends to those who are fully vaccinated.
Before being raised, the U.K. travel alert had been at Level 3 since May.
The U.K. comprises England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Island.
Despite the number of infections remaining high, England lifted all remaining coronavirus restrictions. Nightclubs are permitted to open, and indoor gatherings are now allowed. In the last week, cases are up 43 percent across the U.K., And the area recorded more than 50,000 cases in a day for the first time in six months.
