It’s so hot in Dubai that the government has hired scientists to make it rain.
On average, the United Arab Emirates receives about four inches of rain a year. To increase rainfall, the county has hired a team of scientists to do what Travis Porter does best: make it rain.
The scientists created the rainstorms by launching drones that then shot electricity into the clouds causing them to clump together, The Independent reports. The process produces large raindrops that fall to the ground instead of evaporating into the air.
“What we are trying to do is to make the droplets inside the clouds big enough so that when they fall out of the cloud, they survive down to the surface,” meteorologist and researcher Keri Nicoll told CNN this past May.
The result of the man-made rainstorms comes as a collaborative effort by Nicoll and a team of scientists at the University of Reading in England. In 2017, the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science gave scientists at the university $1.5 million to help create a resolution for the nation’s lack of rain. This effort is one of nine that the UAE has invested in, according to The Washington Post.
