A US Capitol suspect was caught this week, all thanks to someone who matched with him on the dating app “Bumble.”
According to CNN, the suspect, Andrew Taake of Texas, used the dating app while in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021.
His date asked him if he was near the Capitol, and Taake reportedly confirmed he was there “from the very beginning,” sending selfies from the scene and bragging that he spent half an hour in the building.
Days later, his Bumble match turned him in to the FBI and handed over screenshots of their chat that showed Taake saying he was “peacefully standing there” at the Capitol during the riot.
Prosecutors allege that Taake did more than stand there; they claim he was involved in two violent attacks against police defending the building. They presented footage from the front lines that confirmed that Taake used pepper spray against the police and later hit officers with a metal whip.
Taake now faces several federal charges, including felony assault on a police officer, civil disorder, and obstruction of congressional proceedings.
