A 14-year-old girl died after falling from a jumping apparatus on Tuesday at the Land of Illusion’s Aqua Adventures Waterpark in Middletown, Ohio.
Mykiara Jones went underwater for about a half-hour at the park around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Butler County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Emergency crews were called to the scene, but her body was not recovered from the water until about a half-hour later when a lifeguard found her.
She was transported to Dayton Children’s Hospital by air. She was pronounced dead shortly after, the New York Post reported.
An investigation has been launched to determine what caused her death.
“This is a tragedy no parent should have to endure,” Sheriff Richard Jones said. “These are the calls first responders dread and have difficulty dealing with.”
Emergency officials blamed the amount of time it took to find Jones’ body in the water, which was like a “pond” and not clear like a typical swimming pool.
The Park said it was “saddened to learn of the passing of a young girl” at the park.
“We look forward to supporting and collaborating with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and other state and local officials as they continue their investigations following the tragedy,” the park wrote on Facebook.
