Four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles has withdrawn from the gymnastics team finals in Tokyo.
Initial reports claim that Biles was removed from the finals due to injury. However, the gymnastics star is citing her mental health.
“I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being,” she told reporters Tuesday. “We have to protect our body and our mind,” Biles added. “It just sucks when you’re fighting with your own head.”
Following news of Biles’ withdrawal, USA Gymnastics released a statement saying: “Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions. Thinking of you, Simone!”
It’s still unclear if Biles will compete in Thursday’s individual all-around competition.
One of the most remarkable mixed zone press conferences I’ve known. In which Simone Biles described pulling out of tonight’s team event because she had to put her mental health first. Says she was inspired by Naomi Osaka among others #Olympics #ArtisticGymnastics pic.twitter.com/p3Rli5S7J0
