The U.S. Senate has just passed a resolution naming August 11th “National Hip-Hop Celebration Day.”

The new holiday follows the New York State Senate naming December 18th “Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons Day” in honor of the late rapper. The official Senate Periodicals Twitter account shared the announcement last Thursday.

In addition to “National Hip-Hop Celebration Day,” November was also dubbed “Hip Hop History Month.” These monumental designations mark the first time that the U.S. Senate has recognized the genre.

By unanimous consent, the Senate passed S.Res.331 (A resolution designating August 11, 2021, as ‘‘Hip Hop Celebration Day’’, designating August 2021 as ‘‘Hip Hop Recognition Month’’, and designating November 2021 as ‘‘Hip Hop History Month’’)

August 11th has long been regarded as the birth date of hip-hop. On this day in 1973, the legendary DJ Kool Herc and his sister hosted a party in Bronx, New York. It was here that the genre was founded.

This holiday and honorary month come as hip-hop is getting a new appreciation from the world. In May, the Universal Hip Hop Museum broke ground at Bronx Point. The $80 million museum dedicated solely to the creation and legacy of rap will open its door in 2023.
