Demi Lovato is opening up about why she has re-adopted the she/her pronouns after announcing that she was non-binary in 2021.

Demi Lovato says they might “identify as trans” at some point.

Back in May, the 29-year-old singer shared with the world that they are non-binary, saying that the identity “best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression.” They went on to share that the pronouns they prefer are they/them.

Now, Lovato says they are “keeping it open and free.”

“There might be a time where I identify as trans…there might be a time where I identify as nonbinary and gender nonconforming my entire life,” Lovato told the 19th Represents Summit. “Or maybe there’s a period of time when I get older that I identify as a woman.”

“I have a feeling that it’s not going to ever go back to one way or the other,” Lovato continued. “But I just, it’s about keeping it open and free, and just I’m a very fluid person, and so that goes with how I express myself as well.”

In the meantime, Lovato says they understand if someone makes the mistake of mixing up their pronouns: “I accidentally misgender myself sometimes!”

“It’s a huge transition to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life. And it’s difficult to remember sometimes!

“As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, and as long as I remember my truth, that shift will come naturally. I’m just grateful for your effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process.”
