Earlier this week, the city of Atlanta announced it had reached its 100th homicide for this year. As of Sunday, three other men have been added to that list.
According to authorities, three men were fatally shot in a southwest Atlanta parking lot early Sunday morning, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
According to Lt. Daniel Genson, officers responded to a call in the area of Whitehall and McDaniel streets around 12:45 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found three men between the ages of 35-45 years old who had injuries “consistent with gunfire.”
All three were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Currently, we are at the preliminary stages of the investigation to identify witnesses and what other evidence is available,” Genson said.
Authorities have not determined the relationship between the victims. The triple homicide comes just nine hours after another shooting that left a man dead on Magnolia Way in Atlanta.
In 2020, the Atlanta Police Department reported 157 homicides, significantly increasing from the 99 reported homicides in 2019. Earlier this summer, the APD reported nearly a 60% increase in homicide cases.
However, the pace has since slowed. Still, the 2021 homicide count is ahead of last year’s count, the100th homicide was recorded on Oct. 1, 2020.
