A suburban home outside of Chicago, Illinois, will be excavated after two adult brothers told authorities that they buried the bodies of their mother and sister there.
The brothers were found living at the home that the Lyons Police Department authorities called a “hoarder home,” Fox News reported.
On Thursday morning, officers were called out to the home to conduct a wellness check after a water utility company informed them that water service wasn’t being used there.
When they got to the location, they noticed it had no running water or working toilets, and the back door was barricaded. The house was also filled with items and trash from floor to ceiling, including feces and urine bottles.
Police also discovered multiple cats and dogs at the location.
The two brothers are said to be in their late 40s and early 50s and resided there. One of them told officers that his sibling was living upstairs and had “some health issues.” As they treated that brother, he informed officers that his mother and sister had passed while living there and that he and the other brother had buried them in the backyard, Lyons Police Chief Thomas Heroin stated.
“Where are they? He indicated they were buried in the backyard, he said: ‘Oh they got sick, they died and we just buried them in the backyard,’” Herion told WLS-TV.
The mother was in her 70s and had passed away in 2019. Their sister was 44-years-old and died after she hit her head last year.
Apparently, they chose to bury them in the backyard due to fears of COVID-19 and funeral costs.
The men were taken to a local hospital for physical and mental evaluations. They have not been arrested.
