Virginia’s Liberty University has ordered a temporary campus-wide quarantine to start on Monday after a spike in COVID-19 cases among its staff and students.
The university announced that the quarantine would end on September 10.
The university reported 159 active cases among its students and staff as of Saturday, with majority of the cases—124—among students. The school population consists of nearly 15,000 students and 5,000 faculty or staff members.
The number has significantly spiked since last week’s 40 reported COVID-19 cases among students and staff.
The school also saw a spike last September of 141 confirmed cases that caused about 1,200 people connected to the campus to quarantine, NBC News reported.
The school began its fall semester this week and lifted building capacity restrictions and distancing, as well as its masking mandate. The school does not require vaccination.
The school will move in-person classes to online and suspend large, indoor gatherings during the quarantine period.
