A Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher and her daughter, a school food manager, have died of COVID-19 complications.
Two teens are now grieving the loss of their mother, Lakisha Williams, and grandmother, Lillian Smith, who were employed at Dr. William A. Chapman Elementary School in Miami-Dade County.
According to Williams’ husband, Jermaine Williams, both were hospitalized earlier this month. Lakisha had recently just received a promotion at work.
“I was so proud when she got her degree to be this manager, and my wife only did this — not even a month,” the grieving widower said through tears.
Jermaine described his mother-in-law as “a wonderful lady” who loved her students as “her babies.”
“The family tragedy is a terrible reminder of how devastating the coronavirus is,” said Miami-Dade County Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. “One of her final wishes,” said Jermaine Williams, “was to ensure that her two teens received COVID 19 vaccinations while she was in the hospital.”
