Cam Newton Released by the New England Patriots: ‘Please Don’t Feel Sorry for Me. I’m Good’

The New England Patriots have released Cam Newton.

Rookie quarterback Mac Jones will be replacing 32-year-old Cam Newton after the Patriots cut him on Tuesday. According to ESPN, Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Newton would need to reestablish his quarterback position, or it would be given to someone who played it better than him, which Belichick reportedly believes Jones did.

Jones, 22, ended the preseason 36-of-52 for 389 yards. Additionally, he had one touchdown and no interceptions, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reports.

Belichick said Newton was headed in the “right decision” early Tuesday when discussing Newton’s work during the preseason training camp.

Newton spoke out about the news on his Instagram account, saying, “I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say … please don’t feel sorry for me. I’m good.”

Reports show Newton may have been released because he allegedly decided against getting the vaccine.
