Lil Nas X is the first recipient of the Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year Award.

The Trevor Project, the largest group, committed to preventing suicide among LGBTQ adolescence, chose the “Old Town Road” rapper to receive the inaugural honor for his work as a suicide prevention advocate. The 22-year-old has been transparent about his own struggles with wanting to end his life. Upon releasing the visual for his record “Sun Goes Down,” Lil Nas shared that the message in the video was that of him visiting his younger self and uplifting him when he wanted to commit suicide.

CEO of the Trevor Project, Amit Paley, praised Lil Nas X for his willingness to share his journey with LGBTQ youth who may be experiencing similar mental turmoil.

“His vulnerability in his journey to self-acceptance and expression has created space for candid conversations around mental health and sexual identity, signaling to LGBTQ youth that they are not alone,” said Paley.

During his acceptance speech, Lil Nas thanked the organization for its continued efforts with suicide prevention. He shared that if being transparent in his music helps “one kid out there who feels alone,” then it was worth it.

This honor, which kicks off #SuicidePreventionMonth, was given to Lil Nas X shortly after he unveiled the cover art for his anxiously awaited debut album, “Montero,” which will feature guest appearances from Megan Thee Stallion, Elton John, and Doja Cat.
