Thanks to a Brooklyn lawmaker, Michael K. Williams’ name will live on in the form of a law aimed to reduce mass incarceration.

Williams’ home area of East Flatbush is represented by New York State Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, who told TMZ that she and her staff are working with the ACLU to draft a measure in his honor that would assist in reducing the state’s jail population.

The bill will focus on the youth and the Black and Latino people who make up a disproportionate number of inmates, something Williams’ was passionate about.

Hermelyn hopes to meet with Williams’ family about the bill when the time is right, acknowledging that they are now grieving a devastating loss.

More is being done to honor the star. Hermelyn said that Williams’ was planning a back-to-school celebration with her husband, Edu, and actor Jamie Hector where supplies would be delivered to children and parents in the Flatbush area.

The event will take place on September 12th, and it will become an annual remembrance of the actor.

In light of Williams’ death, Hermelyn says she will continue to battle for arts and cultural programming to be funded in East Flatbush, as well as for at-risk youth throughout the state.

It was reported on Monday that the actor died from an alleged overdose in his Brooklyn home.
